True to his word, Michael "always bat first collins" won the toss at Melton and asked his team to bat first. After a run of defeats and disappointing collapses with the bat, it was a good opportunity to put a big score on the board at a ground where runs come fast.
Felixstowe with a revolving opening partnership, this week had Jon Steel and Richard Brown who set a good platform reaching 70-1 before Richard Brown fell to Malcolm Grubb for 20. Jon Steel added 43 runs with 5 boundaries before falling to Johti - formerly a Felixstowe player. John Tooley sent in at three to unleash a Felixstowe counter punch after a couple of quick wickets added a quick 25 including 3 fours and 1 six. This left Felixstowe at 108-3 and in previous weeks is where we have fallen apart however a great partnership between Captain Michael Collins (53) and Callum Burrows (63) and lower order contributions from Tom Boyt (17) and Jamie Burrows (15) led Felixstowe to a great score of 287-7 off their 45 overs.
Pick of the bowlers was former Felixstowe player Johti who bowled 12 overs 3-49 and provides tricky off spin to try and increase the scoring rate.
With better availability this week, Felixstowe had a raft of opening bowlers to choose from with Michael eventually deciding to go with young suffolk star Harry Hitchen and the UK's fastest man Matt Flecknoe. Harry Hitchen took the early wicket of Edward Green for 3. Melton reached 41-1 before four quick wickets of Joshua Stokes bowled by Jamie Burrows for 25 and a run out for Tom Boyt dismissing Will Doble-Thompson. Michael Utting was bowled by John Tooley for 9 and Johti was dismissed for 2 by Jamie Burrows. A good wicket as Johti can take the game away from teams with the bat.
Melton now struggling on 46-5 were unable to put together any significant partnerships chasing down a lofty total meant that wickets fell at regular intervals with the wickets spread across the bowling attack. Jamie Burrows pick of the bowlers, 7 overs, 3-19.
A solid performance and win from the second team in the hope they can build some momentum and begin to move up the league and towards the top half.
Performance of the match: Callum Burrows.
